For young people, by young people

We are a peer-led youth project run by the Youth Affairs Council of WA (YACWA). YEP provides FREE peer-led workshops for young people aged 12-25 on a variety of sexual health and relationship topics thanks to our funding from the Department of Health’s SHBBV Program. We can offer a one-off session or a workshop series (up to 5 weeks). Whilst YEP provides education sessions to all young people, sessions with high populations from the SHBBV target populations will be prioritised (Aboriginal, CaLD, LGBTIQA+, young women, injecting drug users, people involved in the justice system, people involved in the care system or experiencing homelessness). We primarily service the Perth Metro area, but also travel regionally to service communities periodically, dependent on funding. YEP can also provide resources and interactive activities at stalls and community events. If you have specific requests that go beyond our usual scope, we also have some capacity to deliver other fee-for-service trainings.

2024 bookings are open.

Youth workshop bookings will be prioritised to services who have already received or who also professional development sessions.

Whilst you wait for your workshop, make sure to check out our resources to support you to develop your own sexual health sessions in your community.

What kinds of topics do your workshops cover?

The YEP crew runs workshops covering a wide variety of topics, including (but not limited to):

We are also open to hearing about your needs and may have the capacity to develop something bespoke for you.

What is your approach?

The YEP Project is bound by the Youth Work Code of Ethics and seeks to support young people to maintain healthy and positive relationships and sexual experiences.

We do this through a youth peer model and use fun, engaging and informed sexual health activities and relatable conversations.

We operate under a harm minimisation, sex positive and inclusive approach.

Who can attend a workshop?

Young people aged 12-25 years old, although it is best to provide sessions to a narrower age range.

YEP focuses on SHBBV targeted communities: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, CaLD, young people involved with the justice system and/or out of home care, and LGBTIQA+ young people. YEP also creates content for young people with disabilities.

How long is a workshop?

1-2 topics can be covered per session, depending on the topic.

Workshops typically last an hour, but can be made longer or slightly shorter depending on the needs of your group. YEP staff can also come earlier for our session to build rapport with young people in their space.

YEP is experienced in delivering sessions to young people who have experienced trauma and/ or have diverse learning needs. All sessions are trauma-informed and interactive.

How many young people can attend at workshop?

Minimum 6 young people per session, maximum 20 young people per session.

However, please consider the learning needs of your young people and discuss this with us.

Please also consider the cultural, spiritual and personal needs of your young people. Discuss with your clients if they would like single sex groups, a mixed gender group, a whole group or a mixture. Please do feel free to discuss this with YEP staff before booking.

Where do you provide youth sessions?

YEP specialises in providing sessions outside of school settings e.g. youth centres, residential services, mental health services. However if you have a group (ideally from a SHBBV target community) within your school or a particular event that you would like us to attend (e.g. health stall), we may be able to facilitate this.

Youth workshops and attendance at events (e.g. community stalls), can be delivered where deemed COVID safe, within a 1.5 hour drive from Perth CBD.

The YEP Project has limited capacity to provide in person services to the regions, and typically provides 2 regional engagements per annum.

The YEP Project can provide limited presentations or interactive sessions online, where young people are together in a room, with the support of a youth worker/teacher/etc.

What is required of youth workers/the hiring agency?

The hiring organisation is responsible for the room and building management where the workshop is taking place.

At least one member of staff from the hiring agency is required to remain in the room for the duration of the workshop to support the engagement of the participants.

YEP is a peer-based sexual health project. As such, educators are young people. It is important, that peer educators are protected against racism, ableism, queer-phobia, sexism and intimidation, as much as possible. It is expected that the hiring organisation will actively work towards supporting the wellbeing of the peer educators. Should you feel this may be a complex issue for your organisation please speak to our Senior Educator, Zoe, on zoe@yacwa.org.au. Alternatively, you may like to request a professional development session with our Project Coordinator, Lorna, on lorna@yacwa.org.au who can show you how to run our activities with your young people.

Due to the topics we discuss, disclosures of sexual assault or intimate partner violence are unfortunately common. Should YEP staff receive the disclosures directly, these will be forwarded on to nominated staff at the hiring agency. The hiring organisation is responsible for supporting young people after the workshop to provide psychosocial supports as required. Staff on site during a YEP workshop should be prepared to manage disclosures and have knowledge of how to refer to local support services.

Is there a cost to the workshops?

The YEP Project’s youth workshops are provided for free, thanks to our funding from the Department of Health WA. If ongoing workshops are required, a fee for service model may be negotiated.

Workshops are provided on site in community.

I want to request you at a stall or community event, is this possible?

Yes we love outreach and stall events! Let us know about your next event and what you would like us to deliver.

If you are interested in a long-term arrangement (e.g. a term/series of workshops or have a greater need), this may have a small cost – please discuss this with us and we will advise you. We can also negotiate with you so that you can get the most out of our core funding opportunities.

Do you delivery workshops online/digitally?

While our preference is delivering our workshops in-person to young people, we are also able to deliver some of our workshops and resources online when requested. This is to ensure the safety of both our team and the young people we work with.

I want a series of sessions over a period of weeks/months. Is this an option?

Yes, we offer a 5 week series which can be delivered weekly or across several months. Please request this in your booking form.
