Heya! My name’s Julia and I’m one of YEP’s volunteers. I’ve just started studying postgraduate Health Promotion at Curtin University after completing my Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the same uni. That makes me sound like I’m really professional, but in reality I’m just a huge dork.
My favourite shows are all kids shows, I love baking really extravagant chocolate desserts and I’m a huge Pokémon nerd. I’ve always loved topics seen as ‘taboo’ so naturally when I saw ‘sexology’ as a subject in my second year at university my eyes widened and I jumped at it. I learnt so much about sexual health and sexuality, but most importantly I learnt how to deconstruct gender roles society has placed on us. It really changed my life, that was it… I knew sexual health was the place for me.
Eager to learn more I started volunteering for the WA AIDs Council working on their needle syringe exchange program and started to learn about harm reduction. At the time it blew my mind, but it just makes so much sense! We need to help people to be able to look after their own health.
I’m also super passionate about mental health and volunteer with mental health charity Zero2Hero as a school speaker and mentor on leadership camps. After experiencing mental illness during high school, I realised the importance of educating young people about how to look after themselves. I think it’s so important to break down stigma around not only mental illness, but all ‘forbidden’ topics. So that brings me to now, I’m so pumped to help out YEP and be a part of change. I love chatting to people about sexuality, and I feel every time I talk to someone working in this space I learn something new. By starting conversations about sexual health and giving people the education needed to make good decisions I really feel we will make a difference. Go team!
