Hey hey! My name’s Nia and I’m the YEP Project Coordinator here at YACWA. I came on board at the end of April, and since then it’s been go-go-go!!! I’m super excited to be part of this next stage of the project, having known about it since it began way back in 2009 when I was working in Kununurra with Save the Children doing sexual health research with Aboriginal young people within the East Kimberley.
I’m not going to disclose my age, because I’d rather you guess. But what I will say is that I’ve been working in international and community development – in both Australia and overseas – for about 10 years now, with a focus on youth development and empowering vulnerable groups. I was born in the Philippines, spent 10 years in Papua New Guinea, and migrated to Darwin at the age of 13.
I love to travel (been to just over 50 countries yay!), reading, watching movies and sports (I used to be a tennis player), playing video games, getting tattoos (using safe, sterile equipment of course!) and dancing. But most of all, I absolutely love hanging out with my gorgeous baby pup Obi Wan Kenobi (yes, I am a Star Wars nerd).
I have a Masters in International & Community Development (Double Major) from Deakin University in Melbourne, as well as a Bachelor of Social Science (Criminology) with Honours from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney. Aaaannnd before that, I’m a super proud alumni of Darwin High School #NTrepresent.
I’m totally excited to be taking care of the YEP Project moving forward, so we’ll see where this journey takes us! Catch ya, friends!
