Hey, my name’s Amelia Murray and I’m 19. I’m from a farm in the central Wheatbelt but I’m currently living in Perth studying medical science at UWA. I’m super into music – some of my favourite artists right now are Ball Park Music, Leon Bridges and Courtney Barnett, and I’m in a couple of bands around Perth myself.
For the past 18 months I’ve been volunteering with Dr YES, a group run by the AMA which takes medical students to schools to engage young people in conversations about health. The main focuses of our discussions are alcohol and drugs, mental health and sexual health, and we encourage young people to take responsibility for and be proactive with their health. Throughout the year we mostly do sessions around Perth, but 3 times a year we do trips to rural schools too. I’ve had such a great time working with so many kids and an awesome group of volunteers, and I can’t wait to do the same with the YEP Project!
I think sexual health and everything else that comes with it is such an important topic, but it’s one that is spoken about so rarely. My aim as a YEP crew member is to not only get across the important information, but also make people feel more comfortable talking about sexual health topics.
