YEP Volunteer Blog Post – Kendall Thomson: Women Can Have Wet Dreams Too!

When I was in high school, I was having a sleep over at my pal’s house, her sister wasn’t home so I nabbed a bed instead of the floor (yes!). I was sound asleep dreaming away and then [insert 70’s porno music] it turned a little ‘sexy’, a few dream minutes later, I woke up to my vaginal walls contracting and feeling a little bit flustered – I was having a bloody orgasm! At the time I remember thinking…’oh my god, what the hell just happened?!’ I was totally embarrassed, had no idea how it happened and certainly wasn’t going to tell my friend I got all hot and heavy with my dreams in her sister’s bed! That would have made it around the lower school quad on Monday morning in NO TIME AT ALL!

So here is a little lesson that I wish I had way back when. Wet dreams, nocturnal emissions, sleep-gasms, nocturnal orgasms, are spontaneous orgasms during sleep that includes vaginal wetness or an orgasm (or both). We’ve known about these little night time surprises for quite some time; they were first recorded by Alfred Kinsey (the trailblazer of sexuality research), who found that approximately 40% of women had experienced the phenomenon. A (only slightly) more recent study published in the Journal of Sex Research found that the number of women who experience nocturnal orgasms is around 85%, it tends to happen before the age of 21 and can occur before the age of 13, but often around the time puberty sets in, just like for the lads. Interestingly (but not surprisingly) there aren’t a whole lot of studies on the topic, largely because female genitalia are internal making it harder to monitor. It is also possible to have them and not know or be woken by them, and you can also not have them at all, that is totally normal and common too!

As research on the topic is a little scarce and not so recent I did some of my own and discovered that one of my girlfriends also experiences this amazingness, often when she has an afternoon nap! If I was her, I’d be napping every day! Hello!

Have you ever had a sleep-gasm?

Sweet dreams, my pretties!
